Recognizing Advancements That Propelled The Future

by High Desert Frameworks!

For 70 years, Tru Vue® has been an innovator in the glazing industry. So for our anniversary display at the West Coast Art and Frame Expo in January 2017, we asked custom framers to create pieces using some of the most breakthrough products from our history, celebrating the Tru Frameable Moments™ of those times.

To recognize  the launch of  Reflection Control® in 1969, Myrna Dow chose to commemorate a giant leap for mankind when on July 20, the first man walked on the moon.

Recognizing Advancements That Propelled The Future

By Myrna Dow, Owner of High Desert Frameworks

The moment

In 1969, the same year that Tru Vue® launched Reflection Control® glass and brought the custom framing industry forward, the United States put a man on the moon, closing a decade that was marked progress in many ways. When I was asked to create a piece that represented this era, it was clear to me that the moon landing was the Tru Frameable Moment™ from the time that had a lasting impact on generations to come.

I began the design by considering what images I would use to represent the moon landing. Fortunately, NASA has an incredible site that includes a large collection of photographs which, as digital printers, we were able to work with through trial and error to select those with the best resolution for our use. At first, our selections were oriented toward the Earth, but we ultimately chose to make it about the moon. Culling through the images, which influenced the ultimate design, was possibly the most challenging aspect of the project.

The design

The photos we chose are of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module Eagle, the Command Module Columbia that carried the astronauts on this historic mission to and from the moon, and astronaut Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon with astronaut Neil Armstrong reflected in the face plate of his helmet. On the latter, we added the words, “That’s one small step …,” signifying the impact this individual action had on the entire world. It changed our perspective on what is possible.

As the moon landing set in motion further space exploration, Reflection Control was just the beginning for premium glazing in the custom framing industry. Eventually, Museum Glass® was introduced, combining a superior anti-reflective viewing experience with 99% UV protection. Reflection Control is still used in some applications, but to use it to its best abilities in a framing project; you should only use one to two mat boards to ensure there is no significant air gap between the glazing and the artwork as a non-glare glazing will distort the image if there is too much space. Because of this, I created a thin layer of mat to frame the smaller inset photos. Also, I used a small mat liner around the edge to keep everything as level as possible without adding much depth.

Out of this world details

With the image of the pod, I knew I wanted to work with Atomic Frames on a 30”x 30” frame that emulated the burned, tarnished and colorful patina of the Command Module Columbia after blasting through the atmosphere to return to Earth. With its welded steel construction and custom finishing, Atomic Frames was an ideal choice. The piece is on display in my shop and has generated a lot of interest from customers.

Reflection Control was a major advancement for the industry at the time, and it shows how far Tru Vue has taken our industry with improvements on glazing in products like Museum Glass and Optium Museum Acrylic®. When you think about how much progress has been made since the end of the 60’s, it’s exciting to consider what’s next in any industry, including custom framing.

Meet Rob Appell of Man Sewing. A quilt maker on a mission!

by High Desert Frameworks!

As most of you know, The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show was last Saturday with another 6 days leading up to the "big day."  On the big day we were treated with a display of 1200 plus quilts on the buildings of downtown Sisters Oregon.

There is more than just the "Big Day" at the
Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.

One recent addition to quilt show week has been the events on Sunday -- also know as Save it for Sunday or Quilt Show Sunday depending on who you talk to.  The Sunday event hosted and sponsored by Five Pine Lodge and Conference Center is a really intimate and up close affair with a guest quilter, their story and of course their quilts.

This year we were treated with an inspirational and emotional lecture by Rob Appell!

Rob walked us through his journey as a person, husband, father, quilter, friend of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show and the personal struggles and bumps in the road he has endured in getting to where he is today.  His fast pace and humorous talk made many in the packed house, laugh, cheer, clap and tear up a time or two.  Rob is a talented quilter with a passion for the industry, education and reaching out and building community for the continuation of the art form.

Rob has many passions, besides quilting and surfing and one that he spoke of yesterday is his ongoing efforts to raise $25,000 for Operations Homefront.  The nonprofit, serving America's Military Families, whose mission is to build strong, stable, and secure military families so they can thrive — not simply struggle to get by — in the communities they have worked so hard to protect.  There are so many Veterans that are in need.  The organization is close to his heart.

Help Rob Raise $25,000 for Operations Homefront.

After the interactive lecture we enjoyed a court yard walk of his quilts hanging among the Ponderous trees on the campus of Five Pine Lodge.  Breathtaking!

Quilt Show Sunday:  What a great way to end Quilt Show Week!

Rob is so supportive of the Quilt Show, Quilters Affair and all the events.  Again this year, Rob donated a Fabric Post Card to the Wish Upon A Card fundraiser.  You can read about the event on our blog at:  820 Custom Frames Later.  Here is Rob's two Fabric Card Donation this year.

820 Custom Frames later: Wish Upon A Card 2017 - Part of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show

by High Desert Frameworks!

The Wish Upon A Card fundraiser started in 2005 with very humble beginnings.  The signature fundraiser for High Desert Frameworks grew over the years and raised over a hundred thousand dollars for cancer support through the significant efforts and support of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show,  Michael Miller Fabrics , Quilters from around the world, Wendy's Wish, SOQS Board members , show executive directors, Ann Richardson and Jeanette Pilak, volunteers (Kathy Pazera, Kathy Miller and Ginny Hall) and hundreds of patrons. Our "biggest year" was 2015 with $28,000 of custom framed, matted and individual fabric post cards sold. It was a fun year!   Since 2016 Wish Upon A Card has raised money for the quilt show and SOQS Visual Arts & Design Scholarship Fund through the Sisters Gro program.  Special recognition goes to Tru Vue Inc, our fantastic supporter and supplier, since 2013, of the Museum Glass used for the Wish Upon A Card event.

Come Celebrate the 2017 Wish Upon A Card Fabric Post Card Auction.

In 2017 High Desert Frameworks will donate 50 archival custom frames.  This year also marks High Desert Frameworks' 820th donated archival and uniquely designed custom frame for the Wish Upon A Card program!  It's been a very fun trip.

The Big Why

On the request of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, Myrna wrote the following on May 10, 2009 to explain why she has been so involved in the Wish Project:

“Wish Upon a Card began 4 years ago.  The first year I watched the project take off and the quilters produced wonderful small format works of quilt art.  The frames were of “ready made” quality and it was a good beginning.  With my love of picture framing the postcards cried out to my artistic nature and I knew together we could make fabulous framed quilted treasures.  Little did I know how important it would be for my personal life to be involved with Wendy’s Wish.  During this time my father was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and passed away.  Cancer had touched my life and it hurt.  Now it became something more than an artistic endeavor, it became a passion to do my best to feature the postcards and raise as much money to aid people who were fighting cancer.  I had seen first hand all of the struggles and felt the heartache.  The second year around 70 framed postcards were auctioned and approximately $12,000 was raised for Wendy’s Wish. That year my mom who was a quilter came to the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.  We celebrated the success of the auctioned framed cards and knew how much it would help families stricken by cancer.  Last year the quilters created wonderful postcards and we went to town again and framed 80.  There was a lot of excitement and many of teacher cards were snatched up for record amounts.  During this time my mother was fighting cancer.  I have asked myself repeatedly how could this happen.  Cancer is one of the most horrible diseases and it touches all of our lives.  I feel honored to be able to use my talents to help make someones life a little less difficult.  My mom died the following October.  This year we will all pull together again and create fabulous treasures that will be auctioned during the 35th anniversary of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.  We hope to present Wendy’s Wish with large check that will allow them to continue to help many, many people who work so hard everyday to battle cancer.”

Gallery Wall Anywhere? How about your half bathroom?

by High Desert Frameworks!

We have written numerous post on successful gallery wall hanging for your home or office, arranging framed art on your wall and arranging color as part of a gallery wall concept.  Most recently we even suggested using ledges as an alternative hanging solution.   You can find our prior posts by searching here:  Gallery Wall.  Thanks to Apartment Therapy we can now add:  Gallery wall for your bathroom!  You can read their full article here:  Try This: A Gallery Wall in the Bathroom .  We recommend the half bathroom to avoid any shower or bath steam!

Step one: Doing some research will help determine the scope of the project and what you want to accomplish.  You might start with a small wall in the hallway.  Family photo walls are a great way to bring personality into your home and you don't have to spend a fortune.

Step one starts here -- Photo Organization suggestions.

by High Desert Frameworks!

We previously posted topics about digital image and photo print organization and now comes:  The six steps to photo organization as told by Cathi Nelsona Houzz Contributor and founder of the Association of Personal Photo Organizers.

Got Boxes of Printed Photos? 6 Tips on Getting Organized

Read her full story here:  You Can Do It: 6 Steps to Organizing Your Loose Photos

Here at High Desert Frameworks, we feel the two most important steps are -- Find a workspace and digitize/back up.  For many of us, a project of this nature isn't going to get done in a weekend.  Find a workspace that you can start, stop and restart your project until completed.  Nothing is worse than putting a project to bed before it is completed.  Due to the fact that we scan photo's and have recently added our "General Purpose Photo Scanning" service to our scanning line up we truly appreciate how important it is to scan and back up your data!  Scanning / digitizing your photos allow you to share them via social media, facebook and email.  You can also restore, enlarge and ehnance your images then custom frame!  What a fun way to bring back memories to you and other members of your family.

It's never too late to start preserving your memories for a lifetime.  Don't wait until it is overwhelming.  If you feel like you have a "ton" of photo's -- take it easy and use the 6 steps as outlined in Cathi's article.  After all -- Just take one photo at time and it will get done!

If you are looking for help in scanning, printing and custom framing please look us up here in Central Oregon at High Desert Frameworks!
