This Side of Wonderful - Being Creative and Brave.
With about 8 hours to kill on a return trip from Dublin, Ireland I decided to watch a couple of classic movies vs watching recent hits. "How to Make an American Quilt [1995] +++" and "Field of Dreams" where quickly downloaded and placed in the watch later queue. I had always wanted to watch the American Quilt movie as one of our artist friends, John Simpkins was associated with the movie and did a special fine art print [ WHERE LOVE RESIDES ] that was closely associated with the film crew and cast. Additionally, High Desert Frameworks has a long association with The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show and The Wish Upon A Card fundraiser. Quilting is in our blood shall we say. So watching a "quilting/chick flick" on an airplane from Dublin to JFK wasn't out of the norm.
The take away after watching How to Make an American Quilt very closely matched our business approach and philosophy. We must always remember our roots, relish our friends, associates and clients all while being on the leading edge of design, technology, preservation techniques and framing. We must not be afraid of breaking rules and being brave in our approach to design, business and life. About 10 years about we adopted a tag line for High Desert Frameworks: Our inspiration comes from Henri Matisse:

It's our way of being BRAVE, making the right choices and following our instinct.
As in many aspects of our daily lives there are no rules you can follow. Finn Dodd, the lead character in "How To Make An American Quilt" said it so elegantly when she describe her attachment (and likely success in marriage) to her future husband , Sam.
As Anna says about making a quilt, you have to choose your combination carefully. The right choices will enhance your quilt. The wrong choices will dull the colors, hide their original beauty. There are no rules you can follow. You have to go by your instinct. And you have to be brave.

I'll tell you what makes me happy about marrying Sam. I know our marriage has as good of a chance of being wonderful as it does missing the mark. However, I'm banking on our love for each other to weigh a bit heavier on the wonderful side. Finn Dodd

How to Make an American Quilt is a 1995 drama film, and an adaptation of the 1991 novel of the same name by Whitney Otto. Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, the film stars Winona Ryder, Anne Bancroft, Ellen Burstyn, Kate Nelligan and Alfre Woodard. The film received a nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
