A few photo, slide and negative scans and restoration can often have far reaching consequences

Little did we know that when we took on a project for Beverly Patkotak Grinage that it would result in a published book. Not only published but a great read and documentation of a man’s life and vision.

In 2019, Beverly came to High Desert Frameworks to scan and restore some photographs, slides and negatives. It was a really great project for us as we love old image and especially those that are part of family history. Beverly presented us with a great selection of one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable images that needed a lot of digital restoration help. We reassured her (two or three times) the images would be well cared for as we do with all our custom framing and digital service customers. Handling irreplaceable one-of-a-kind images isn’t something to be taken lightly. They went into our fire proof storage area right away! The resulting scan are part of a book she authored about her Grandfather, Paul Patkotak

“The North Slope of Alaska is a distant place. It is set high above the Arctic Circle, far away from where most people would ever dream of making a life. This region is marked by treacherous conditions. There are harsh extremes and wild transitions. People have always lived there though. The Inupiat are an ancient culture. Their way of life has, for countless millennia, tied to the land and the water and the animals that live there. At no time during Inupiat history has a transition been as drastic and marked by tragedy as the turn of the 20th century. The white man was coming north. He piloted great ships, breaking the ice, coming to harvest the abundant whales, walrus, and other important animals. One day a ship appeared on the horizon. And then, in what seemed like the blink of an eye, a way of life was changed forever. Paul Patkotak was born in the midst of that transition. Disease was rampant. Starvation was common. Animals teetered on the brink of extinction. The ancestral ways were dying out. Somehow, he survived. Patkotak eventually became known across the North Slope and beyond as "The Apostle of the North." He was a man with a deep connection to God and was used by Him to perform many miracles. Not only is this Patkotak's story. This is the story of his people.”

About the author (2019) Beverly Patkotak Grinage, an Inupiaq Eskimo, was raised in Barrow, Alaska. She lived with her Aapa (grandpa) Patkotak for twelve years. After graduating from Barrow High School in 1978, she went on to attain her Bachelor's degree in Cultural Anthropology, followed by a Master's Degree in Rural Development from the University of Alaska. She is a former Executive Director for the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission and the former Managing Editor of the Tundra Times, a statewide native newspaper. Beverly retired as president of Ilisagvik College, the only tribal college in Alaska, and was honored to receive the distinguished title of President Emeritus. Grinage's work has been acknowledged and recognized by a number of organizations on the North Slope of Alaska including the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission, the North Slope Borough School District, and the Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corporation. Starvation to Salvation is her first book.

A big thank you to Beverly for entrusting her images with High Desert Frameworks. We truly enjoyed working with her and loved the message and history of your family. Thanks for a copy of the book too!
